Piet
Borst (1934) was born and educated in Amsterdam, where
he obtained an MD, PhD in bio-
chemistry. He works as a
staff-member with his research group in the Netherlands
Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital,
where he was already part-time investigator, Director of
Research and Chairman of the Board of Directors from
1983 to 1999. Borst was Professor of Clinical
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the University of
Amsterdam from 1965 to 2004.
His present research deals
with mechanisms of chemotherapy in cancer cells and the
function of a new DNA base J in trypanosomatids.
On the side, he is a member of Balkenende’s Innovation
Platform and of international scientific boards and
academies. Since 1993 Borst contributes
a column to the Science Supplement of the NRC.
