Masterclass IV

Proteomics: From biological discovery to candidate biomarker

Connie Jimenez
Head of OncoProteomics Laboratory, VU Medical Center / Cancer Center Amsterdam

The research field that deals with the large-scale comprehensive analysis of proteins (expression, modifications, interactions) is called proteomics. Recent developments in proteomic technology, most notably mass spectrometry, offer great potential to yield insight into biological and disease mechanisms as well as novel biomarkers that are translatable to routine clinical use. In particular, quantitative proteomics based on protein separation by liquid-chromatography (LC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) has emerged as a powerful approach for identifying and quantifying hundreds to thousands of proteins in complex proteomes.

This masterclass will focus on the question whether proteomics has delivered its promises. Are we there yet? Are we on schedule? What progress has been made in the field of basic biology and biomedical/clinical applications?
A panel of experts will reflect on the above questions from different angles (technology, basic science, biomedical applications).

Confirmed scientists on the panel include:
Sander Piersma (Oncoproteomics Laboratory, VUmc)
Paul Hensbergen (Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry Unit, LUMC)
Ka Wan Li (Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology, VU)
Madalina Oppermann (Applied Biosystems)
