Masterclass VI

Toxicogenomics & Bioinformatics: a pathway perspective

Rob Stierum
Head Toxicogenomics, TNO Quality of Life, Zeist
Perry Moerland
Assistant Professor Bioinformatics, Bioinformatics Laboratory, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam

Purpose of this masterclass is to briefly outline and discuss with participants the basic principles of toxicology. The new discipline of toxicogenomics, involving the implementation of genomics technologies in toxicology to predict and unravel mechanism of toxicity will be outlined. The implications of toxicogenomics in the developments of alternatives to animal testing will be highlighted. Further, bioinformatics approaches specifically usefull for toxicogenomics will be illustrated with emphasis on pathway and network analysis. Together, the masterclass will provide an overview and promote discussion on how this new promising technology is revolutionizing toxicology as an applied science.
