Nikki studied Genetics at the Free University in
Amsterdam. Her PhD thesis (at Plant Genetic Systems in
Belgium) focused on aspects of gene expression in
plants.
During her work as a PhD student she first
encountered
patents but thought they were rather a
nuisance.
As a postdoctoral fellow she studied viral
gene expression
in mammalian cells at the Institute of
Virology in Glasgow,
Scotland, and became interested in
the opportunities
intellectual property can give a
company.
Being fed up with the slow speed of research and ready
for a change in life she returned to the Netherlands and
switched to the field of patent law.
Nikki worked as
Manager Intellectual Property with the Dutch biotech
company Crucell. Presently, Nikki is employed with the
Netherlands Industrial Property Office. Her work as a
technical consultant involves giving legal advices on
the validity of Dutch patents to the Dutch court.
In
addition she participates in international discussions
on harmonization of patent law.
