Edward
M. (Eddy) Rubin, M.D., Ph.D., while initially working
primarily as an interpreter of DNA sequence, became a
DNA sequence generator when he assumed the Directorship
of the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute. He
led this large DNA sequencing center in the contribution
of a significant fraction of the finished sequence of
the human genome.
With this completed, he
is now directing the Joint Genome Institute in
sequencing the genomes of organisms from realms of the
biosphere ranging from microbes living in the deepest
depths of the ocean to primitive plants and animals
occupying evolutionary niches far distant from Homo
sapiens.
